Our story
Our journey began with a passion for using geospatial technology to drive innovation and solve complex problems for clients across a range of industries.
Like other great startups, GIS People too was born in a garage at the home of our founder, Igor Stjepanovic. Through his work, Igor noticed a common challenge: geospatial projects required a unique blend of IT, Mathematics, and Geography skills that were hard to find in one person. That’s when the idea hit him like a bolt of lightning – what if he could create a company that focused solely on providing these specialized skills to clients?
And so, GIS People was born in 2010. With hard work, dedication, and a passion for excellence, the company quickly became a household name in the geospatial industry. Within few short years, GIS People services became highly sought after by clients from a variety of industries. GIS People's thought leadership position enables the company to provide accurate and agnostic advice that our customers can trust.

We offer them meaningful employment, on-the-job training, and support in the geospatial industry. Often the first employer for refugees and young migrants, GIS People helps them enter the Australian workforce, contributing to greater diversity and equity in the industry.

Social Enterprise
Our journey began when our founders, Igor and Marija, migrants themselves, faced challenges in finding their first jobs in Australia. Since its foundation in 2010, GIS People has helped hundreds of young migrants and refugees secure roles in industries they are qualified for, rather than settling for jobs like driving Uber or cleaning offices.
At GIS People, our mission is to promote social inclusion and empower underrepresented groups, such as refugees, migrants, and women. We strive to address employment barriers by providing meaningful opportunities, training, and support within the geospatial industry.
GIS People generates revenue by delivering world-class geospatial solutions, ensuring our social initiatives are financially sustainable. This allows us to reinvest in programs like the Brisbane Geospatial Network, a free monthly event that connects multicultural communities with employment opportunities in our industry.
A large and important part of what we do at GIS People is being the first employer of young migrants, helping them enter the Australian workforce. This commitment not only enhances individual lives but also contributes to greater diversity and equity in the GIS industry, benefiting the broader community.
GIS People has been a foundational member of the Multicultural Ambassador Program since 2017, a platform for respected and influential leaders advocating for inclusion and diversity.
