Geospatial Scientist
Background
As a Geospatial Scientist, you will be responsible for planning, directing, and conducting survey work to determine and delineate boundaries and features of land, marine floors, and underground structures. You will prepare and revise maps, charts, and other geographic products, as well as analyse, present, and maintain geographical information about various locations over time. Your role will involve a blend of technical expertise, research, and development in surveying, mapping, and spatial information systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Determine the position of points of interest on the earth’s surface, including marine floors, and prepare the final product data in digital form.
- Supervise the preparation of plans, maps, charts, and drawings, managing spatial information systems.
- Conduct research and development in surveying and photogrammetric measurement systems, cadastral systems, and land information systems.
- Plan and design land subdivision projects, negotiating details with local governments and other authorities.
- Advise engineering professionals, environmental scientists, and other relevant professionals on technical requirements of surveying, mapping, and spatial information systems.
- Compile and evaluate data, interpret codes of practice, and write reports on survey measurement, land use, and tenure.
- Evaluate, compile, and maintain spatial information using digital and graphical sources, including aerial photographs, satellite imagery, survey documents, existing maps, and historical data.
- Analyse and interpret data to design maps, graphs, plans, drawings, and 3D models using geographic information systems.
- Develop and trial new applications for use in geographic information systems.
- Supervise and coordinate the work of Surveying or Spatial Science Technicians in producing and reproducing geographic products.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geospatial Science, Surveying, Cartography, Geography, or a related field.
- Relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
- Registration or licensing may be required, depending on the location and specific job requirements.
Skills & Competencies:
- Proficiency in geographic information systems (GIS) and related technologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret and create maps, charts, and other geographic representations.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and analysis.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Salary range is AUD78,000 to AUD85,000 plus super.
